City & Country: Castles, Cascades & Craic

We will be operating on the beautiful and interesting Nore river. Our safari trail will pass through historic Kilkenny city as you pass under the high walls of the magnificent castle modeled on a French chateau.

Our tour starts above the Bleach road weir and follows the linear park all the way into the city. The first section after shooting the weir is mostly calm and peaceful. Native trees hang gently over the sides of the river providing cover for nesting Kingfishers on the high sandy banks. Family of ducks and water-hens are abundant as are some pairing swans. As we approach the city we will drop over the new weir.

Having passed under Greens bridge the Smithwicks brewery is on our right and the castle comes into view. We will pass through the centre of Kilkenny and under the high ramparts of the noble castle, home of the Butler family for many centuries – today a very interesting public attraction.

Leaving the bustle of the city centre behind us the castle cascades await and the instructors will take special care to get you over them safely. Expect thrills and some spills.(There is an option to portage)

The final stretch of our trail takes back into a rural landscape of old abandoned Mills a reminder of a different era, tranquil waters, beautiful native trees and wildlife but just before we finish there will be one final little challenge at Archers Grove.

All in all a great paddle with plenty of variety. Paddling either canoes or Sit on top kayaks (your choice) you can expect plenty of fun, beautiful natural environment and even some thrills as there will be a little whitewater along the way. Not to worry as you will be guided by a qualified experienced instructor. Suitable for all ages and most abilities.

Meeting point will be either Archers Grove or Bleach road weir You can expect the river adventure to take 2.5hrs approx. I can assure you this is a very worthwhile adventure and one that you will have no hesitation in recommending to your friends in the future

I can book you in by return email. I look forward to meeting you on the river.
